Abstract
Provincial commuters live in the provinces but work in Paris, and travel there every day. Work provides them with a good reason for making this journey. Their home and domestic activities provide another for returning on a daily basis. Throughout this paper it is demonstrated that behind such commuting practices is a short-term or long-term equilibrium, composed of a desire to change the location of their residence or job or a fear of doing so, and a centrifugal or centripetal desire to resolve (or not) the tension created by spatio-temporal constraints. Our purpose has been to conduct a qualitative analysis that provides a typology of long-distance rail commuters. 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS and INRETS. All rights reserved.
