Abstract

Abstract Single-episode crisis events encompass a wide variety of life experiences, including natural disasters, auto accidents, surgeries, crimes, and loss of loved ones. Although single episodes may require intervention, research indicates that a single shocking event exposure need not lead to an overwhelming experience for those experiencing the event. The reason for this is the individual response to each event is based on each individual’s adaptive coping mechanisms combined with the type of event. Events involving criminal violence, where one individual inflicts trauma on another (e.g., robbery, rape, and assault), have a greater psychological impact on the victim than events such as auto accidents, surgeries, or natural disasters.
