Abstract
The obscuration of sunspot umbras by 44 flares of importance 2 or greater is investigated by superimposing Lockheed Hα photoheliograms on Mt. Wilson sunspot drawings. The percentage of the total umbral area of a sunspot group covered by a flare is found to be related to the intensity of the associated 2800-Mc/s burst and to the occurrence of meter-wave type IV radiation.
