Abstract

In the present study it is experimentally demonstrated that aging at 673 K for 0.5 h under a tensile stress along the [ 1 ¯ 2 3 ] direction creates the necessary conditions for observing the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) with reversible tensile strains up to ε = +1.8% in Co 35 Ni 35 Al 30 single crystals . The TWSME is attributed to the internal stress fields created by the oriented arrangement of the dispersed particles resulting from the stress-assisted aging. In contrast, the TWSME was not observed in stress-free aged [ 1 ¯ 2 3 ]-oriented crystals.
