Abstract

Two-way fully-coupled ESMF (Earth System Modeling Framework) COAMPS® (Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System) simulations of the Adriatic Sea bora were performed to compare to observational data from several recent field studies as well as to an uncoupled simulation. Results show that latent and sensible heat fluxes were superior in the fully coupled run using NCOM (Navy Coastal Ocean Model) SSTs than the uncoupled run utilizing just NCODA (Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation) SSTs. COAMPS winds and wind stresses produced by the bora events show mixed results when compared to the observational data. The ocean circulation pattern in the fully-coupled run responded by producing mixed results with regard to the double gyre surface current pattern that is prevalent during strong bora events.
