Abstract

In this paper mutual coupling (ME) reduction in multi-layer patch antenna using two layer electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure is presented. A step via electromagnetic band gap (SV-EBG) structure is used to reduce the mutual coupling between two patch antenna and therefore the performance of the MIMO increases. The simulation of unit cell of SV EBG using Ansys HFSS is done. To measure the band gap property of two layer SV-EBG suspended microstrip line method is used and results are validated. The application of two layer SV-EBG is also carried out to reduce the mutual coupling between two probe fed patch antenna and validated experimentally at 5.30 GHz. From simulated and experimental results it is clear that 35 dB mutual coupling reduction is achieved with use of two layer SV-EBG.
