Abstract

A recent search for superheavy elements in natural samples involves the observation of fission induced tracks from a mass separated sample. Using a high sensitivity mass spectrometer we propose a method to ascertain if the fission tracks observed in the mass region 280-310 originate in uranium molecular compounds. With a detection sensitivity of ${10}^{7}$ atoms of $^{235}\mathrm{U}$ we show that the fission tracks observed in a previously investigated Pt ore were associated with uranium molecules.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Superheavy elements; mass spectrometry.
