Abstract

*This study was subsidized in part by a grant from New Century, Educational Division, Meredith Corporation. Do Western European countries experience the mathematics education problems of two-year colleges in the U.S.A.? Do these countries have post-secondary schools comparable to our two-year colleges? Is mathematics education in Western Europe more innovative than in the U.S.A.? As a member of the Southern Illinois Univerity 1970 Study Tour of European Junior Colleges, I was intensely interested in establishing valid responses to the preceding questions. The schedule of last summer's study tour provided time for investigations in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Munich, Innsbruck, Milan, Lucerne, Paris, and London. In each of these cities, I had the opportunity to discuss the general post-secondary educational planning with a responsible official of the local or state ministry of education. Western European nations apparently share common educational objectives, with only minor variations. Among those shared are the following:
