Abstract

The luminescence of the Pb2+ ion in the alkaline-earth fluorohalides with the PbFCl structure is reported. These systems show an ultraviolet emission at low temperatures, and a blue to yellowish emission at higher temperatures. This is ascribed to the (co-) existence of two different excited states, one typical for Pb2+, and the other probably of charge-transfer nature.
