Abstract

A coherent image amplification system consisting of two stages suitable for incorporation into a coherent optical processor with feedback is discussed. The amplification technique utilizes in stage one of the system a grating-tuned, injection-locked, folded-ring dye laser, which is locked to a narrow-band cw source for signal preamplification. A comparison is drawn between the folded-ring design and a previous simple linear cavity design of the injection-locked dye laser. Improvements include higher locking efficiency, reduced injection requirements, and increased peak power output. The preamplified signal from stage one is input to the dye image amplifier—stage two of the system. Because of improved performance in stage one, a higher amplification factor in stage two can be obtained.
