Abstract

Two species of pandarid copepods (Siphonostomatoida: Pandaridae) parasitic on sharks off the east coast of Taiwan are reported. They are Echthrogaleus coleoptratus (Guerin-Meneville, 1837) from three species of sharks: the shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinisque, 1810, the copper shark Carcharhinus brachyurus (Gunther, 1870), and the blue shark Prionace glauca (Linnaeus, 1758) and Echthrogaleus asiaticus sp. nov. from two species of thresher sharks: the pelagic thresher Alopias pelagicus Nakamura, 1935 and the bigeye thresher A. superciliosus Lowe, 1841. The copper shark C. brachyurus is a new host record for E. coleoptratus. It is discussed and concluded that Echthrogalleus pellucidus Shiino, 1963 is a valid species and both ”Echthrogaleus denticulatus” reported by Pillai (1985) from India and by Ho and Kim (1996) from Japan are synonymous with the new species.
