Abstract

In this paper, two rhodamine derivatives, (E)-3′,6′-bis(diethylamino)-2-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)amino)spiro[isoindoline-1,9′-xanthene]-3-thione (denoted as RS-Naph) and (E)-3′,6′-bis(diethylamino)-2-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)amino)spiro[isoindoline-1,9′-xanthen]-3-one (denoted as Rb-Naph), were designed and synthesized for mercury ion sensing. An up-conversion β-NaYF4:Yb(III)/Er(III) excitation host was constructed so that the two probes could be excited by near-IR radiation (980nm). Good spectral overlap between host emission and probe absorption guaranteed an efficient energy transfer between them, which was further confirmed by host emission decay dynamics. The composite systems of this host with the two probes in NaAc–HAc buffer solution showed emission turn-on effect towards mercury ion. Linear spectral response towards increasing mercury concentrations was obtained from both composite systems with good selectivity. In addition, both sensing systems were photostable under continuous radiation of 10h.
