Abstract

Two biological-physiological races of the kangaroo tick Ornithodoros gurneyi have been identified. One was found in soil in caves in ranges in Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia, and the other in soil under trees in open savannah country in New South Wales and South Australia. The cave race is smaller than the plains race. Examination of nymphs and adults under the light microscope and EMS micrographs of larvae revealed no structural differences between the two races. There are significant physiological differences between the two races. Limited cross fertilisation experiments produced viable larvae.
