Abstract
Phosphors with the composition Y1.80Er0.10Yb0.10O2S have been prepared by solid-state reaction. We have analyzed the diffuse reflectance, luminescence excitation, and photoluminescence spectra of this material under Stokes and anti-Stokes optical excitation by two light sources. Visible luminescence was observed when two resonance infrared photons of different energies were absorbed successively. This effect can be understood in terms of the metastable states of the 4 I 11/2 excited-state level of the erbium ion, from which transitions to higher energy levels occur when infrared photons are absorbed.
