Abstract

The accuracy of the approximate expression given by Ranger (1978) for the force exerted by a two-phase Stokes flow on a sphere which symmetrically straddles the interface, is examined analytically and shown to depend critically on the ability of the surface tension or gravity forces to resist deformation of the interface.
