Abstract

We study the fragmentation functions for quarks into two hadrons using the jet calculus of Konishi, Ukawa, and Veneziano. We diagonalize their expressions for the moments of the two-particle fragmentation functions and explicitly display all dependence on the input moments. We obtain scaling violations much larger than in previous calculations. We also show that the Q/sup 2/ dependence of the two-particle fragmentation functions cannot be predicted until they have been accurately measured at some Q/sub 0/ /sup 2/. We show that log-log plots of the double moments display extremely simple behavior. We introduce linear combinations of the fragmentation functions that are the analogs of the nonsinglet fragmentation function for the single-particle case. In an appendix, we give an extremely rapid method for inverting the moments.
