Abstract

Previous works by this author have indicated that the location of the peak of the fundamental frequency within the accented vowel can cue the perception of rising and falling tones in Serbo-Croation. Research by Lehiste and Ivič indicates that the relationship between the initial and final values of the fundamental frequency within the accented vowel may also be important for the perception of Serbo-Croation tone. The present study investigates the significance of these two parameters along with their interaction for the perception of rising and falling tones. The question of the relative importance of the two parameters ia also addressed and it is found that there is no basis for claiming that one or the other parameter is more important for the perception of Serbo-Croation tone. Variations in pitch peak location and the relationship between the intial and final fundamental frequency within the accented vowel significantly affect the perception of Serbo-Croation tone. The two parameters also significantly interact in their affects on the perception of native listeners.
