Abstract
In this paper, we propose two schemes for the system performance improvement in the higher data rate and long length terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) links. In the first proposed scheme, the time diversity technique is used in the relay-based FSO system that the relay is amplify-and-forward (AF) with variable gain. In the second scheme, the combination of the MIMO–FSO system and time diversity technique is presented. In our proposed schemes, it is assumed that the performance of the FSO system is affected by and the atmospheric turbulence and the Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD). The FSO link is modeled by the Gamma–Gamma fading distribution. For the first time, we derive closed-form expressions for the probability of fade for each proposed scheme. To compare our proposed schemes with a single FSO link, the performance of these systems are presented in the same conditions to show their effectiveness. Numerical simulations confirm the adequacies of our analytical results.
