Abstract

Syrrhopodon chenii and S. orientalis are described as new species. Theformer is known only from Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China; the latter also occurs in Guangdong Province, and is known as well from a specimen from Selangor, peninsular Malaysia. Study of historical and recent collections of Calymperaceae from China has shown the presence there of two previously undescribed species of Syrrhopodon, one of which is also known from peninsular Malaysia. SYRRHOPODON CHENII Reese & Lin, sp. nov. (FIG. 1-5) Plantae S. armato Mitt. et S. leprieurio Mont. similes sed cellulis intramarginalibus dorsaliter spinosis foliorum valde differunt. Plants loosely gregarious, to ca. 5 mm tall, simple or forked, with red rhizoids; leaves essentially monomorphic but lower ones broader than upper, loosely arcuate and folded when dry, ascending when moist, 2.5-3.5 mm long, linear to linear-lanceolate from scarcely broader base; cells of upper lamina pellucid, quadrate to rectangular, ca. 5 x 5 jtm, bulging ventrally, mostly smooth or minutely papillose dorsally except toward margins of some leaves some cells dorsally spinose; margins of upper lamina entire, erect to incurved, thickened, bordered all around with elongate hyaline cells; margins of lower lamina bearing delicate, hyaline, ascending to spreading or recurved cilia and teeth; costa smooth dorsally except at spinose apex, remotely spinose ventrally from cancellinae to apex, in transverse section showing a median row of guide cells, dorsal and ventral bands of stereids, and enlarged outer cells dorsally and ventrally, the dorsal outer cells with very thin and often collapsed outer walls and the costa then appearing to be dorsally ridged in transverse section; cancellinae conspicuous, distinct, scalariform; gemmae scanty, borne on leaf tips. Sporophytes not seen. TYPE: PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. GUANGDONG PROV.: Ding Hu Shan Nature Preserve. Forested slope, understory dominated by tree ferns and palms, 2308'N, 1123 5'E, alt. 240-300 m, base oftree, Redfearn et al. 34406 (holotype-PE; isotypes--H, HIRO, IBSC, LAF, MO, NY). Paratype-as above but on tree trunk, juvenile, Redfearn et al. 34412 (H, IBSC, LAF, MO, NY, PE). This species must be quite uncommon because only two collections of it are known. The plants are quite similar to those of the American S. leprieurii in many respects but the peculiar dorsally spinose intramarginal cells are distinctive (Fig. 3); the same quality also distinguishes S. chenii from S. armatus, whose distinctly unipapillose cells also help differentiate it. The name of this moss commemorates the late Dr. Pen-cieh Chen, eminent student of Chinese mosses. SYRRHOPODON ORIENTALIS Reese & Lin, sp. nov. (FIG. 6-11) Plantae S. gaudichaudio Mont. similes sed armis dentatis vel ciliatis foliorum satis differunt. Plants caespitose, with red rhizoids, stems simple or forked, to ca. 1 cm tall; leaves monomorphic, 23 mm long, falcate and folded-involute both wet and dry from broad hyaline base; upper lamina bordered all around with elongate hyaline cells, entire except at apex, erect to incurved or nearly involute; cells of upper lamina obscure, densely pluripapillose dorsally and ventrally, quadrangular to rectangular, ca. 5 x 5-8 Itm; margins of lower lamina nearly entire or with stout, spreading-ascending teeth or cilia; costa terminating distally in a stout, sharp tooth, smooth to spinose dorsally, more or less spinose ventrally, the spines sometimes clubbed or branched, in transverse section with dorsal and ventral stereid bands and median row of guide cells, with enlarged outer cells dorsally and ventrally or enlarged cells more or less lacking dorsally; cancellinae distinct, rounded above; gemmae not seen.
