Abstract
Moderate earthquakes ( m bLg 4.4 and 4.3) occurred near Ste-Agathe-des-Monts in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone on 14 March 1996 and 24 May 1997. Both were felt in the Ottawa-Montreal region. Focal mechanisms for both earthquakes indicate oblique-thrust faulting, probably on northwest striking planes, which is typical of western Quebec earthquakes. The focal mechanisms differ in detail but are compatible with the regional stress field. Seismograms recorded at distant stations suggest midcrustal hypocentral depths, while strong-motion records suggest that the earthquakes may have been shallower. Portable instruments installed near the respective epicenters recorded one potential aftershock of the 1996 earthquake and no aftershocks for the 1997 event.
