Abstract

The author argues that putschists in the 27 May coup in Turkey took several actions from sending some of their members as military attaches to Washington and London to appointing well-connected diplomat Selim Sarper as the Foreign Minister after the coup and declaring their loyalty to the West as soon as possible to allow no soothe any Western misgiving. Regarding the U.S. role, the author argues that the US underwrote the coup financially, politically and militarily but it neither fomented the coup or nor guided it. As in the case of 27 May coup, 12 September coup by the top command shows that generals valued U.S. approval of their action. Generals had already received necessary positive signals from their U.S. counterparts in the US in prior to the coup.
