Abstract

This paper highlights the cell loss problem associated with coding video for variable bit-rate transmission over asynchronous transmission mode networks. Countermeasures are discussed from which a 2-layer coding algorithm has been chosen for a more detailed study. Simulation results are presented for a 2-layer codec using a constant bit-rate base layer and a variable rate enhancement layer compared to a 1-layer model. These results are then used further to investigate achievable network loadings.
