Abstract

Two fundamental approaches can be adopted for heterarchical multiagent scheduling of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS): Product-based scheduling or resource-based scheduling. The aim of this paper is first to define the basic concepts of these two methods (agent modeling, structure design methodology, communication protocols,....). The final part of the paper provides some simulation results and describes the specific advantages and drawbacks of these two approaches.
