Abstract
For the stream function of simple harmonic small amplitude gravity waves in a stratified incompressible fluid a differential equation is derived. From this it is proved in a general way that the periods of such waves are monotonic increasing functions of the wave length and that they have a lower limit which is inversely proportional to the square root of the absolute maximum of the vertical density gradient.
