Abstract
Legionella pneumophila is often the cause of unexpected serious pneumonia [1]. In our rehabilitation center we encountered two cases of severe nosocomial pneumonia occurring within a period of one year. Both patients were hospitalized in the same ward and ultimately died. Legionella pneumophila serotype 1 was cultured from the respiratory specimens of both patients. The bacteria originated from an unexpected and originally unsuspected source. Although the source of legionellae is frequently the hot water supply [1–3], we report nosocomial Legionnaires’ disease resulting from Legionella pneumophila contamination of a thermally polluted cold water supply.
