Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to discuss the political activity of Polish women and the way it developed after the granting of suffrage in 1918. During the period of the Second Polish Republic (1918–1939) this was an elitist affair, involving only a mall number of women, mainly from backgrounds in the inelligentsia. After 1945 the political activity of women in Communist Poland had different characteristics. The League of Women was not an independent organisation, its activity was controlled and dictated by the Communist authorities.
