Abstract

The long time asymptotic state of a two dimensional electrostatic ion-electron Vlasov plasma is investigated. It is found that the spectrum is given by mod Ek mod 2 alpha ( beta +ak2)-1, where beta and alpha are determined by the initial conditions. A negative value of beta is possible and corresponds to negative energy states. These results are equal to those found for guiding center plasmas. Contrary to the guiding center plasma the net charge density varies, however. The magnetic field does not appear in the partition function of the canonical ensemble explicitly. Therefore, these results hold also for unmagnetized two dimensional plasmas.
