Abstract
Spectral problems of determination of the mode propagation constants and electromagnetic fields of a two-dimensional optical waveguide with a diagonal permittivity tensor are formulated mathematically and solved numerically. The results for some refractive-index profiles in the isotropic case are in good agreement with the solutions of other authors. A specific calculation is made for an anisotropic diffusion waveguide. Some physical aspects of the obtained equations are discussed.
