Abstract

In this paper, a CFD model has been developed for the prediction of flow pattern and eddy diffusivity profiles in bubble columns. A low Reynolds number k–ɛ model has been incorporated for the near-wall region. Simulations have been carried out for a wide range of superficial gas velocity (VG), column diameter (D), column height (HD) and the nature of the gas–liquid system. The model predictions have been compared with all the experimental data available in the literature. Complete energy balance has been established in all the cases. The validated CFD model has been extended for the prediction of pressure drop and heat transfer for two-phase gas–liquid flows in bubble columns. The predicted values of the two-phase friction multiplier and heat transfer coefficient were in good agreement with the experimental data.
