Abstract

Two paralysing preparations (called A and B) were obtained from a homogenate of females of the solitary wasp Microbracon hebetor (Say) using QAE-Sephadex A-50 ion exchange chromatography. The activity present in the A-preparation forms a small part of the total activity. The peak of paralysing activity in the analytical gel chromatography elution pattern of the A-preparation is associated with a mol. wt of about 42,000, the peak of paralysing activity of the B-preparation with a mol. wt of about 57,000. The two preparations have the same mode of action on the neuromuscular transmission in a flight muscle of Pieris brassicae (L.). The slopes of the log dose-effect curves for the paralysis of Galleria mellonella (L.) larvae are significantly different, the slope for the B-preparation being the steepest. Compared with the sensitivity of Galleria mellonella (L.) larvae, Apis mellifera L. workers are more sensitive to the A-preparation than to the B-preparation.
