Abstract

The three- and two-coefficient Cauchy equations are derived based on the three-band model for the wavelength- and temperature-dependent refractive indices of anisotropic liquid crystals. For high birefringence (Δn⩾0.2) liquid crystals, the three-coefficient Cauchy model fits experimental results more accurately than the two-coefficient model. For low birefringence (Δn⩽0.12) liquid crystal mixtures the two-coefficient Cauchy model works equally well as the three-coefficient model in the off-resonance spectral region.
