Abstract

A 71-year-old male and a 36-year-old male were referred for evaluation of 2 submucosal nodules, one in the lower lip and the other in buccal mucosa, respectively. Both patients reported no symptoms and the lesions were present for 6 months and 12 months, respectively. Both were clinically characterized by submucosal nodules with a slightly purplish color lined by normal oral mucosa, measuring 3 cm and 4 cm in diameter, respectively. Clinical diagnosis included mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and pleomorphic adenoma. Incisional biopsies were performed and histologic analysis of the specimens was compatible with secretory carcinoma. Both patients were submitted to surgical removal of the lesions and final diagnosis for both specimens was secretory carcinoma. The tumor tends to be locally limited, but recurrence is a distinct possibility. Patients have been followed up for 11 and 10 months with no signs of local recurrence observed.
