Abstract

Two automatic control systems for filling large tanks with gravitationally stable density stratified liquids are described. They are: (i) an analogue method using gate and mixture control valves operated through servomechanisms by rotating cams; (ii) a digital method with a numerically controlled metering-type pump. Measurements taken of a typical stratification showed that the actual density distribution was within 0?02% of that expected using the analogue method and within 0?01% using the digital method.
