Abstract

The ever growing public adoption of digital services, such as Twitter, has made them important tools in political communication. Accordingly, their uses have been met with increasing research attention. Research on Twitter has focused mostly on adoption rates and usage patterns. Recently, researchers have also started to experiment with digital trace data documenting user interactions with Twitter. Any discussion of this data’s research potential for social scientists has to be grounded in an understanding of the service, its usage patterns, and its technological design. Accordingly, this chapter, will give an overview of Twitter, its popular usage conventions and their potential for researchers, together with events that made the microblogging service an increasingly popular tool in everyday communication and political campaigns.
