Abstract

Multiple pregnancies can come with a number of risk factors for mother and baby. The risks are present at almost every stage of the pregnancy through to the birth. Twin pregnancies have a higher incidence of pre-term birth, while perinatal mortality is also higher than it is for singletons (Barret and Ritchie, 2002). There is also a greater risk of cerebral palsy and various birth defects. In turn, the mother has a greater risk of pre-eclampsia, anaemia, liver problems and gestational diabetes. It is therefore paramount that twin pregnancies are managed and monitored well through the antepartum and intrapartum stages to ensure a positive outcome for all.
