Abstract
A twin-core fiber (TCF) with noncircular cross section has been fabricated. The two cores of the TCF can be easily identified. It has been demonstrated that signals can be easily excited and detected in this TCF, by splicing a single-mode fiber to either of the TCF cores. The splice loss below 1 dB has been repeatedly obtained. Mutual splicing of these TCFs with low splice loss, by using a commercial fusion splicer, has also been demonstrated. The splice loss below 1.5 dB has been repeatedly obtained. Optical devices based on this TCF may be easily inserted into a standard SMF. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
