Abstract

This article makes the case that The Twilight Saga is a fairy tale, structured by pairs of binary oppositions, which traces the ideal pattern of feminine psychological development as set forth in Jungian psychology. To enter Forks is to enter the archetypal realm of the unconscious. Edward and Jacob are animus-figures; Victoria is Bella's shadow. Bella's eventual psychological wholeness (individuation) is symbolized in the stable quaternio with which the novel ends: Bella married to Edward and her daughter (a younger Bella) paired with Jacob. The Saga's conclusion shows the relationship of the individuated person to her community, as Bella saves the Cullen clan.
