Abstract

A review is given on the quantum correction Δr in the W–Z mass correlation, as derived from the calculation of the muon lifetime in the standard model. Δr was calculated for the first time in 1980 at the one-loop level. The one-loop result has been improved over the last two decades by numerically important QCD and electroweak higher order terms, thus establishing a powerful relation that allows accurate predictions of the W-boson mass MW for high-precision tests of the standard model.
