AbstractThe application of the biochemical oxygen demand or dissolved oxygen absorption test in the routine examination of sewage polluted liquid in China probably dates from 1920 when an organisation wan sat up by the Shanghai Municipal Council to deal with the problems arising Iron the installation of a water‐borne sewage system. The limitation of the test were not well known in 1923 when the author joined this organization. It became necessary to carry out very extensive investigation when apparent anomalies were encountered.
