Abstract

THe use of audiovisual material for teaching sociology is widespread, and for good reason. Audiovisual media are excellent pedagogical tools. As Burton (1988) notes, it is the combination of sight and sound that has been found uniquely effective for learning (p. 263). Films, whether popular or educational, can reinforce and clarify lectures, introduce new concepts and perspectives stimulate classroom discussion, heighten student interest, and make concrete the other wise abstract or theoretical (Stein 1983). The challeng for instructors, of course, is to find high quality films that are interesting, relevant, and intellectually stimulating.
