Abstract

1948 The aim of this study was to investigate the time course of blood volume changes during a 12 wk endurance training programme in elderly males. Fourteen men (68 ± 2 yr) trained 3 days per wk for 30 min on a cycle ergometer at 70% V̇O2peak. Peak oxygen consumption and blood volume were reassessed every 4 wk. Blood volume was measured using the Evans Blue dye dilution method. Results: (Table)TableDespite a significant increase in V̇O2peak, the present study found no significant change in blood volume. These results indicate that a 12 wk endurance training programme does not induce hypervolemia in healthy elderly males. Supported by The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.
