Abstract

Donald Trump’s Twitter activity is among the most controversial elements of his political rise. Reactions by journalists and politicians have been overwhelmingly negative, yet Trump has undeniably revolutionized the use of Twitter in presidential elections and the presidency. This chapter examines Trump’s use of Twitter by analyzing every one of Trump’s tweets for when, what, and how Trump tweeted as a candidate and president elect. Negative and emphatic tweets were most prevalent and most popular. Trump’s “successful” Twitter approach raises many questions about his presidency and the future of presidential campaigns. This is just the beginning of what is poised to become a rapidly growing area of scholarly focus in campaigns and elections.
