Abstract
The acetylcholine receptor (AChR) is an integral membrane protein that opens a cation-selective ion channel in response to the binding of acetylcho line. The AChR is a major protein of the post-synaptic membranes of neuromuscular junctions and synapses in the electroplax. Here we review the mechanisms of synthesis and degradation of AChR and the mechanisms by which these processes are regulated to determine the number and loca tion of AChR. We emphasize data appearing since previous reviews (41, 47, 92).
