Abstract
Fain O n February 27, 2009, the Federal Register officially announced the American Associ ation of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Accreditation Program as 1 of 3 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved accrediting organizations for diabetes self management education/training. CMS approval means that an accredited program is eligible for reimbursement for diabetes selfmanagement training/education (DSMT/E) services by Medicare and possibly other payers. AADE has been the frontrunner in providing exper tise and resources needed to support outpatient DSMT/E. Thus, it was logical for AADE to submit an application to CMS for recognition as a national accreditation pro gram. This announcement ensures that Medicare benefi ciaries have access to highquality DSMT/E. For the past several years, AADE has focused efforts on communitybased delivery of diabetes education. Such a model allows professionals to provide compre hensive care to patients with diabetes consistent with implementation of the chronic care model. A key goal in building community allows patients to receive diabetes education when and where they want it. As an associa tion committed to promoting healthy living through diabetes selfmanagement, AADE designed an accredita tion program focusing on expanding options of deliver ing DSMT/E in communitybased settings such as primary care offices, community centers, and so on. More communitybased settings being accredited, translates into increased access for patients with diabetes. In addition to programs basing instruction on National Standards for Diabetes SelfManagement Education, AADE will pro vide access and encourage use of AADE7ΤΜ in tracking data needed for accreditation. For more information related to AADE Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (eg, policies and pro cedures, requirements, pricing) please refer to the Web site (www.diabeteseducator.org/accreditation) or email deap@aadenet.org. Congratulations to AADE for a job well done! Editorial i i
