Abstract

This chapter explains how Last Great Wilderness presentations inspired audience members to become Arctic Refuge activists. It emphasizes how Lenny Kohm, Gwich’in spokespeople, and others used storytelling to build a social movement. The chapter is framed around Marshall Ganz’s concept of “public narrative,” including its three key components: the story of self, the story of us, and the story of now. The chapter is based on interviews with a few individuals who became involved in the Arctic Refuge struggle after seeing the show: Jeffrey Barrie, Sara Callaghan, David Clemmons, Alex Tapia, and Heather Zichal. It features stories of their activism and also briefly discusses Barrie’s documentary film Arctic Quest: Our Search for Truth.
