Abstract On Saturday. February 27. 1858, the most successful daily newspaper in the United States, James Gordon Bennett’s New York Herald,turned its full attention to revival. Under stacked headlines, seven deep, the story received a full column of coverage on page one: For the first time in the nineteenth century in America, revivalism was front page news in the secular press, appearing alongside stories of city politics, the activities of Congress, and sensational crimes.
