Abstract

This article proposed a strategy of generating lubricating passage on the turning insert to minimize the friction and cutting force. The lubricating passage comprised of a micro groove on the insert along the normal plane. The passage enabled favourable flow of lubricant towards the rake surface and flushed away the chips from the insert. Therefore, a better lubricating interface has been generated at the chip-tool contact zone with ameliorated penetration of the cutting fluid. Consequently, the friction and cutting force has been reduced. Maximum 55% reduction of cutting force has been achieved using these inserts in combination with MQL supply. Additionally, the flank wear and average surface roughness have been reduced significantly. Moreover, these inserts have participated as chip breaker as well.
