Abstract

Meeting an American Indian chief will not fulfill anyone’s expectations of a taciturn elder, face aglow by a campfire. Perhaps no other group evokes such rousing imagery as Indians, while remaining remarkably unknown. Abroad, not the Statue of Liberty, but the feathered, pony‐riding warrior typifies the North American continent. The onslaught of a whooping war party against the 7th Cavalry on a movie screen in Oslo, Tokyo, or Lima leaves no doubt as to where the public’s sympathies lie — in their hearts, soldiers and cowboys never win.
