Abstract

ABSTRACT Turnaround time of journal article delivery can influence the effectiveness of library journal collections. While Interlibrary Loan is no substitute for basic holdings, effective delivery of articles on esoteric and/or seldom requested topics, or in expensive journals, can enhance the quality of a library's journal collection. Technology has increased the number of options Interlibrary Loan Departments have for the delivery of journal articles. Ariel developed by the Research Libraries Group, and fax are new methods that supplement traditional methods such as courier and mail systems. What impact have these methods had on decreasing turnaround time? A statistical analysis of the turnaround time of four methods–Ariel, courier, fax and mail–was done to determine what was the average turnaround time using this mix of systems. The analysis yielded an average turnaround time of 4.79 days.
