Abstract

I recently attended the 2010 RCN Annual International Nursing Research Conference in Gateshead, hosted by the RCN Research Society. It is common for delegates to describe feeling re-energised when leaving the conference and this is crucial at a time when clinicians and researchers are facing a number of difficulties as a result of the current economic climate. It is important to remember that research and development is at the heart of the delivery of high quality health care. As budgets carry on shrinking and cuts continue to bite it is essential that research, its implementation and training to carry it out effectively are not seen as an easy target for cost-cutting. But this year’s keynote lectures left no doubt as to exactly what can be achieved if research is treated as an important and integral element of nursing care.
